SO4J album is the sophomore album for Mike Soul an artist who is relatively new and fresh to the Christian music arena having moved from secular. He did have some success in secular music as he recalls it but when he gave his life to the Lord “I made a decision to solely make music for the Kingdom”. Much of his album is centred around his transformation and the some of the issues faced when you are a believer.
Songs like I.O.U ME document his thought like many a new believer who hears the call to Christ is convicted that everything you about your life you owe to Him. Put God First expresses the sentiment that all Christians should be reminded of when they come to Him, Mike explains “When I started this project I wasn’t even thinking of it as a Gospel record, so I felt completely free to create.”
Mike is also an accomplished pianist and states, I thought very hard about having additional musicians that I could add to the process, musically and spiritually but it ended being just me”.
SO4J album, released late 2018, was written during a period that Mike Soul says was “a kind of challenging time of transition in my personal and professional life. He explains “It had been four years since I was able to release the debut album. During that time, Mike Soul says, “I lost some connections in a music industry and some relationships were visibly falling apart. Some members of a band that had backed him in previous years left, moving on to family life or to their own projects.
“In that space I spent a good deal of time focusing on what God had planned for my life. Eventually, I realized I was kind of writing a musical story of trust and faith. The direction of my music was no longer a traditional sound as trying to fly the banner as a ‘die hard’ believer”. This pushed Mike down a road of being vocal and bold about proclaiming his new identity.
